FLORIDA BASS FISHING
FLORIDA FISHING REPORT:
DECEMBER 1997

Florida bass fishingFlorida bass fishing is the most exciting adventure you can experience. The Florida wild shiner accounted for the trophy bass caught on this page. These bass which fell for a wild shiner were caught by anglers from across the US during the month of December 1997.

FLORIDA BASS FISHING REPORT: DECEMBER 30, 1997

Mike Hunter and Bruce (Indian Springs, OH - home ph: 513-887-7135 - e-mail: bass7259@aol.com) and step-dad Cloyd Rinehart (Sebring, FL home ph: 941-471-1819 - e-mail: clrine435@aol.com) landed only 10 bass during a day of guide fishing with me on Dec.. 30, 1997. However, Cloyd did manage to land a 9 1/2 lb’er that hit a 9 inch wild shiner. The fishing was very slow due to a cold front that hit Florida. This plus the heavy winds was hard on us and the fishing. The 9 1/2 lb’er that Cloyd landed had recently spawned. This bass would of when 10 or better if it had not spawned already. Fished the North Shore and Iron Stake areas of lake Okeechobee.

FLORIDA BASS FISHING REPORT: DECEMBER 26 & 27, 1997

Had a father and son team out shiner fishing for one and a half days (Dec. 26th. & 27th. 1997). Richard and his eleven year old son Robert (Robbie) Mahler (Staten Island, NY - home ph: 718-967-6859 - e-mail: mahler@aol.com) caught and released 26 bass up to 7 1/2 lbs. We had 10 bass that ran from 4 to 4 1/2 lbs. Robbie hooked and landed the 7 1/2 lb’er all by himself. This bass was first hooked by Robbie’s dad a half hour earlier and got away after it threw the hook when it jumped clear out of the water.... The reason I know it was the same bass is that it had a chunk of flesh “still bloody” ripped out of it's mouth! In the 13 years that I have guided on Okeechobee I would have to say that this has happened several times with clients I have had out. In fact, I have had my clients hook big fish that we saw and lost simply by immediately casting a fresh wild shiner right out where they lost the fish. Robbie will never let his dad forget how he lost that 7 1/2 lb’er. I of course helped to add fuel to that memory. I fished the North Shore and Moonshine Bay cattail islands to get out of the heavy wind. Fish were hitting everywhere.

FLORIDA BASS FISHING REPORT: DECEMBER 23, 1997

Guided a father and his 10 year old son for a day (Dec. 23, 1997) of wild shiner fishing on lake Okeechobee (Mike and son Nick Kropp - Franklin, WI - home ph: 414-421-9328 - e-mail: klmnkropp@webtv.net).We managed to put 10 bass in the boat up to 6 lbs. Nick hooked and landed the 6 lb’er with a little help from his dad. We fished the North Shore of the lake around the floating grass islands. Morning fishing was slow because I could not move around to locate active fish due to a heavy fog that blanketed the lake all morning. We however had plenty of action during the afternoon session of fishing. Mike and Nick released all the fish.

FLORIDA BASS FISHING REPORT: DECEMBER 16 & 17, 1997

Had a party out for 2 half days of wild shiner fishing (Dec. 16 & 17, 1997). Ken Kennedy, his son Chris and girlfriend Karri (Charleston, WV - home ph: 304-344-5431 - e-mail: Ken1516@aol.com) caught 14 bass up to 7 ½ lbs. The 7 ½ lb’er and others were caught by Chris in the Moonshine area of the Lake. This past weeks weather - heavy rain, gusty winds and a cold front has been rough on the fishing and the lake. The heavy wind storms that lashed the lake has moved giant grass islands all over the place. If you have not been on the lake recently - you will not recognize it! Despite the terrible weather conditions I my clients have had to fish in - “ I have been able to put them on to some nice trophy fish (see previous reports listed).

FLORIDA BASS FISHING REPORT: DECEMBER 13 - 15, 1997

Had a husband and wife guide fishing party out for 3 days (Rick and Cathleen Sporer - Glenview, IL - home ph: 847-657-7265 - e-mail: cathspo@cdw.com) . We fished (Dec. 13 - 15, 1997) with wild shiner during an all day long rain which lasted for 2 1/2 days. On the last 1/2 day session of fishing (the only time the rain stopped) we were hit with a cold front! We in fact were blown off the lake on the second morning by 9:30 with wind gusts of 25 mph or more. Although we only caught 23 bass in 3 days of fishing under some terrible weather conditions - Rick however did manage to hook and land a 8 3/4 lb. trophy bass! Rick’s comment upon holding this beauty “it makes you forget how wet and cold you are” are words I have heard many times over the 13 years I have guided on Okeechobee. We fished coves in the Moonshine and Monkey Box areas of the lake. The 8 3/4 lb’er was caught on a “10 inch shiner” out in the open water around the Point of the Reef.

FLORIDA BASS FISHING REPORT: DECEMBER 5 & 6, 1997

Guided a honeymoon couple for 2 days (Dec. 5th. & 6th. 1997) of wild shiner fishing on lake Okeechobee. Dave Simpson and his wife Lisa (Marshall, VA - home ph: 540-364-4546) caught only 11 bass fishing due to a cold front that slowed down the fishing. To compensate for the poor fishing Lisa did however hook and land a 7 1/2 lb'er. Her husband Dave also hooked and landed a 8 lb'er. Lisa also had on another "big" bass that threw the hook. We fished the Monkey Box and Moonshine Bay. All the fish were caught using shiners.
