guide service bass fishing reports for the month of January. The
areas of Florida's Lake Okeechobee that produced the best trophy
bass fishing, wild shiner fishing techniques and other information
are contained in these fishing reports.
Mike Jones (Weaton,
MD - ph: 301-922-7682) and Tony Varniale (Walkersville, MD - ph:
301-922-7681) caught about 50 bass during
3 days (Jan. 28 - 30, 1998) of wild shiner fishing on Lake Okeechobee.
Mike caught and released a 7 and a 7 1/2 lb. bass.
This senior citizen couple Bob and Joyce Napier (Liberty, IN -
ph: 756-458-6526) caught about 30 bass up to 5 lbs. during 3 days (Jan. 25-27, 1998) of cold
weather fishing on Lake Okeechobee. Joyce caught and released
the 5 lb'er which is in fact considered a trophy bass in Indiana.
This couple who fished with wild shiners during their stay with
us also released all the fish they landed. Joyce somehow managed
to out fish her husband Bob during each day of fishing. This catch
was caugh in the North Shore area of Okeechobee.
Kevin Kendrick (Miramar, FL - ph: 305-625-3083)
and Ruben Consuegra (Miramar, FL - ph: 954-436-2157) caught and
released about 15
bass up to 8 lbs. during
a half day (Jan. 24, 1998) of wild shiner fishing with Ron's Guide
Service.
Steve Simon (Herndon, VA - e-mail:
711-9635@mcimail.com) and Richard Harold (Herndon, VA - 703-709-5453)
caught and released 25 bass up to 5 lbs.
during a two days (Jan. 23 and 24, 1998) of wild shiner fishing
with Ron's Guide Service.
Leo and wife Dottie Russell (Fredericksburg, VA - e-mail: c21allpro@aol.com)
caught about 45
bass up to 5 lbs. using
shiners during 3 days (Jan. 20 - 22, 1998) of fishing on Lake
Okeechobee with Ron's Guide Service. All bass which were released
were caught on the North Shore of Okeechobee.
Guide party Mark Lundergan and his dad Loren (Corning, NY - e-mail:
Lundergam1@corning.com) caught and released 45 bass up to 9 lbs. during 3 days (Jan. 16, 17, 18) of wild
shiner fishing. Mark landed and released the 9 lb'er while his
dad Loren landed and released a 6 lb'er. All fish where caught
on the North Shore area of Lake Okeechobee.
Guided Doug and Nancy Walsh (Tampa,
FL - e-mail: djwalsh@gte.net) for 3 days (Jan. 19 - 21, 1998).
They used wild shiners to catch and release 40 bass up to 7 3/4 lbs. Doug did manage to land the trophy 7 3/4
lb'er despite the fact that his wife Nancy out fished him. I felt
real bad for him one day when she whipped him so bad by catching
15 bass to his 4 that I went so far as purposely mixing up the
rods and giving him her rod with the fish on to help him from
being skunked on the Big-O. Doug tried switching seats with her,
throwing his line over her line and a host of other tricks to
no avail. He did almost land a "big snake" that had
a hold of his shiner! In any event we has fun and caught fish.
We fished the Monkey Box drifting and setting up along the reeds.
This is Doug's second trip fishing with me. On his first trip
without his wife Nancy (July 17 - 19, 1997) he did manage to land
a trophy 9 lb'er out of the 53 bass boated.
Guide party Gator and wife Vickie Allen (N. Augusta, SC - e-mail:
Gallen1342@aol.com) caught and released 6 bass up to 6 lbs. during
one day of fishing (Jan. 22, 1998). Vickie caught the 6 lb'er
late in the evening session of fishing. We had poor fishing due
to heavy winds which limited access to fishing areas. We fished
behind reed islands to block the wind in the Monkey Box area.
Had 2 big fish blow ups that were fish in the trophy class range.
Honeymoon couple James and Debby Field (West Yarmount, MA - home
ph: 508-775-5893) fished 3 days (Jan. 7, 8, 9, 1998) with wild
shiner and landed 46
bass up to 5 lbs. Debby
had a big bass on that managed to get off. James had his share
of the action but was out fished by Debby each day. I fished the
cattails and lily fields in the Monkey Box area of the . All bass
caught were released.
