Florida bass fishing USCG Captain Ron reports
that the Florida wild shiner bass fishing on Lake Okeechobee was
really action packed with the morning and evening wild shiner
fishing time slots being the best times to fish during the month
of July.
Florida
bass fishing 7 1/2 lb. trophy bass
was caught on (July 8, 1999) by John Skimelis Jr. (Shrewsbury,
NJ - e-mail: Bass7015@aol.com). John Jr. and his dad caught 32 bass up to
7 1/2 lbs. using shiners
during the 3 days (July 8 - 10, 1999) they fished on this trip
(their fourth) with Captain Ron. All bass were caught using shiners
and released except for the 7 1/2 lb trophy bass that is being
mounted. All fish were caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee.
John on his "third fishing trip" (June 24 - 26, 1998)
with Captain Ron caught a 8
1/2 lb. Florida trophy bass
on (June 26, 1998) John Jr., his dad and sister Karen (e-mail:
KRNNC@aol.com) caught and released about 45 bass up to 5 lbs.
during the 3 days (June 24 - 26, 1998) they fished with wild shiners.
On this trip "their third since June 1995 with Captain
Ron" we dubbed John's sister Karen the "Mudfish Queen"
after she hooked and caught at least 25 mudfish that ran in weight
from 5 - 8 lbs. On their "first trip" (June 15
-17, 1995) John Jr. hooked and landed a 9 lb. Lake Okeechobee trophy bass. He also landed and released a 6 1/2 lb'er
and 64 other bass from 2-5 lbs. John also caught a 5 1/2 lb. Snook
(Snook and Tarpon are occasionally caught in Lake Okeechobee).
All bass were caught using shiners and released except for the
9 lb. trophy bass that is being mounted. Captain Ron was their
bass fishing guide.
Shelby and Cindy Moseley (Haughton, LA - ph: 318-949-6514) caught

bass up to 5 lbs using shiners
during the 2 half days (July 5 & 6, 1999) they fished with
Captain Ron. Cindy caught and released the 5 lb'er and most of
the fish during their trip. All fish were which were released
were caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee.
John and son Bud Bunkley (Merrit Island, FL - ph: 407-452-5348)
caught and released 9 bass up to 5 lbs
using shiners during a half day (July 4, 1999) of wild shiner
fishing with Captain Ron. All bass were caught on the North Shore
of Lake Okeechobee.
Dennis, Lisa and 10 year old son Peter (Mauston, WI - ph: 608-847-4980)
caught 11
bass up to 5 1/4 lbs using
shiners during the 2 half days (July 3 & 4, 1999) they fished
with Ron's Guide Service. Dennis caught and released the 5 1/4
lb'er. His wife Lisa had one on in the 8 + lbs range that we got
to see just as it threw the hook at the boat. Peter also hung
and lost a big fish. All fish which were released were caught
on the North Shore of Lake Okeechobee.
