LAKE OKEECHOBEE FISHING REPORT:
MAY 1998

guy fishingThe month of May brings on some of the finest largemouth bass and panfish (bluegill, shellcracker) fishing Lake Okeechobee has to offer. Schooling bass are now starting to bust bait fish all over the lake most of the day. My guide parties are enjoying excellent bass fishing which has them jumping out of their seats when a bass explodes on the surface and blows their wild shiner clear out of the water. Live bait, the preferred wild shiner of course is what trophy bass are caught more consistently with. However, artificial lures at this time of the year really do produce big catch's of fish and a trophy every so often. Fly rod fishing whether it's for bass or bluegills can't be beat.

Larry Stowe (New Rochelle, NY - e-mail: DMNPress1@aol.com) and Luis Collazo (Yonkers, NY - e-mail: LAC853@aol.com) caught about
50 bass up to 8 lbs. using shiners during the 3 days (May 27 - 29, 1998) they fished with Ron's Guide Service.

Brett Willingham and dad (Fountain Inn, SC - ph: 864-862-2108) caught
21 bass which included a 6 3/4 and 8 1/2 lb'er using shiners during the 1 day (May 12, 1998) they fished with pro guide Captain Ron (Ron's Guide Service). All the bass were released. All fish were caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee.

Mike McCoy (Brooksville, FL - ph: 352-796-3343). This young Marine who fished 2 days (May 11 & 12, 1998) with Ron's Guide Service
caught a 8 lb'er on a Wal-Mart gold spinnerbait and two 6 lb'ers using shiners. This fine catch and others from 2 - 4 lbs. were caught on the North Shore of Lake Okeechobee.

Frank Blondino (Monroe, VA - ph: 804-299-5087) and son Frank Jr. (Plantation, FL - ph: 954-584-0866 - e-mail: blondino@bellsouth.net) caught 15 bass up to 5 lbs. using shiners during the 1 day (May 11, 1998) they fished with Captain Ron (Ron's Guide Service). All the bass were released. All fish were caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee.

Sterling Anders and son Shep (Fayetteville, AR - e-mail: sanders@absc.com) caught
16 bass up to 5 lbs. using shiners during the 1 day (May 9, 1998) they fished with Captain Ron (Ron's Guide Service). All the bass were released. All fish were caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee.

Frank Oley Jr., dad Frank Sr. (Plains, PA - e-mail: FRANK1961@aol.com) and Frank Zdziarski (Shickshinny, PA) caught 63 bass which included a 5 1/2, 6 and 7 1/2 lb'er. using shiners during the 3 days (May 5 - 7, 1998) they fished with Captain Ron (Ron's Guide Service). All the bass were released except the 7 1/2 lb'er which is being mounted. All fish were caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee.

Mike Hammer (Cincinnati. OH - ph: 513-771-5331) and Brian Bronnert (Cincinnati, OH - ph: 513-385-6935) caught
40 bass up to 5 ½ lbs. using shiners during the 3 days (May 2 - 4, 1998) they fished with Ron's Guide Service. Mike had a trophy bass on that pulled the rod out of his hands. He did manage to get the rod when it hit the water by making a head dive for it. The fish got off after he retrieved the rod from the lake. All fish caught were released. Okeechobee's Monkey Box produced this nice catch of bass.
