The month of October is
known for its cooler weather especially during the evening hours.
Cool evenings coupled with our afternoon showers really helps
to get our bigger bass moving. There are schooling bass just about
everywhere on the lake and especially along the North Shore area
of Okeechobee. Local fishermen are catching crappie (speck's)
jigging in and along the weed edges in the Monkey Box, Spoil Islands
and Sportsman's Canal areas of Okeechobee.
Charlie Brown (Lucedale, MS - e-mail: charlieb@datasync.com) and
Mark Clay (Columbus, MS - e-mail: msclay@futuresouth.com) caught

bass which included 4 bass that ran from 5 - 5 1/2 lbs., a 7 1/2
and 8 lber during
2 and the half days (Oct. 29 and 31, 1998) of wild shiner fishing
with Capn Ron. Charlie caught the 7 1/2 lber during
the first day of fishing while Mark caught the 8 lber on
their second day. All bass were caught in the Monkey Box area
of Lake Okeechobee. All the bass were also released.
Dick Holmes (Plantation, FL - e-mail: CalohH@aol.com) and
son-in-law Kevin Phillips (Orlando, FL) caught 51 bass which
included a 6 1/2 and 7 lber during
2 half day sessions (Oct. 29 and 30, 1998) of wild shiner fishing
with Rons Guide Service. Dick caught the 6 1/2 and 7 lber
while Kevin put a 5 1/2 lber in the boat. All 51 bass were
caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee. All the bass
were live released.
Tom, wife Melissa and 14 year old son Carson Jaegle (Ft. Wayne,
IN - ph: 219-436-6236) caught 8 bass up to 5 1/2 lbs. during a half day (Oct. 27, 1998) of wild
shiner fishing with Capn Ron. Carson caught and released
the 5 1/2 lber. Bass were taken in the Monkey Box area of
Lake Okeechobee.
John DeAgro (Weston, FL - e-mail: jedeagro@aol.com) and son
John DeAgro (Costa Mesa, CA - e-mail: john_a_deagro@notes.seagate.com)
) caught 16
bass up to 7 1/2 lbs. during
2 half day sessions (Oct. 23 and 24, 1998) of wild shiner fishing
with Rons Guide Service. John jr., on their first session
of fishing with Capn Ron caught a 5, 6 and 7 1/2 lb. bass
while his dad using light gear managed put one in the boat that
went over 4 lbs. They also caught 4 other bass up to 3 lbs. for
a total of 8 fish. During their second session they put another
8 bass up to 4 lbs. in the boat. All 16 bass were caught in the
Monkey Box of Lake Okeechobee. All the bass except the 7 1/2 lber
were live released.
Joe and Lori Paladenic (Hereford, AZ - e-mail: JPaladenic@aol.com)
caught 22
bass up to 5 1/2 lbs. during
2 half day sessions (Oct. 17 and 18, 1998) of wild shiner fishing
with Rons Guide Service. This couple in addition to the
5 1/2 lber also caught two other 5 lbers. This nice
catch of bass was caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee.
All bass were live released.
Ed Heath (Wichita, KS - e-mail: heathlaw@swbell.net) and Mike
Payne (Newton, KS) caught 33 bass up to 5 lbs. during
2 half day sessions (Oct. 16 and 17, 1998) of wild shiner fishing
with Ron's Guide Service. Bass were caught on the North Shore
of Lake Okeechobee. All the bass were live released.
Walter Hankosky and son (Venice, FL - ph: 941-497-4311) caught

bass up to 7 lbs. during
2 half day sessions (Oct. 13 and 14, 1998) of wild shiner fishing
with Rons Guide Service. Walter caught the 7 lber
while his son caught a 5 lber only seconds later. This catch
of bass was caught on the North Shore of Lake Okeechobee. All
the bass were live released.
Gordie Keith and son Brian (Palgrave, Ontario, Canada - e-mail:
keith@idirect.com) caught 96 bass up to 5 lbs.
during 3 days (Oct. 12 - 14, 1998) of artificial lure and wild
shiner fishing with Rons Guide Service. They fished with
artificial lures for 2 days with a total catch of 69 bass that
ran up to 3 lbs. Worms, June bug color and chrome rattle traps
produced the best action. This fine catch of bass was caught in
the Monkey Box and North Shore areas of Lake Okeechobee. All the
bass were live released.
Larry and Judy Harris (Whitwell, TN - ph: 423-825-6615) caught

bass up to 7 lbs. during
3 days (Oct. 5 - 7, 1998) of wild shiner fishing with Rons
Guide Service. Judy caught the 7 lber on their first day
of fishing. Her husband Larry caught a 6 lber on the second
day. This couple also had 14 other bass that ran in the 5 lb.
+ range. This fine catch of bass came out of the North Shore area
of Okeechobee. All bass were released except the 7 lber
which is being mounted.
