The month of October started off with warm
days and slightly cooler mornings. Schooling bass are just about
everywhere on the lake. Our bigger bass are starting to move into
the grass areas of the lake. Crappie (speck's) are being caught
jigging in and along the weed edges in Sportsman Canal. Hurricane
Irene just passed through our area with heavy winds and some rain.
Expect the trophy bass fishing on Okeechobee to really kick in
now.
Danny Moran (Elkhart, IN - ph: 219-674-6695) caught and released about 10 bass up to 3 1/2 lbs. during a half day (Oct. 28, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Ron's Guide Service. Fish were caught in the Moonshine area of Lake Okeechobee.
George "Chip" Stokes (DeLand, FL -ph: 904-734-9101) and his son Dave Stokes (DeLand, FL - ph: 904-736-1468) caught and released 23 bass that included a 5 lb., 5 1/2 lb., 6 lb. and 7 lb'er during 2 half days (Oct. 27 & 28, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Ron's Guide Service. Dave caught the 5 1/2 and 7 lb'er while his dad landed a 5 and 6 lb'er. Bass were caught in the Moonshine area of Lake Okeechobee.
Werner and wife Aleci Siegle (Runnermede, NJ - ph: 609-939-4270) caught and released 11 bass up to 5 lbs during 2 half days (Oct. 26 - 27, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Ron's Guide Service. Bass were caught in Moonshiner area of Lake Okeechobee.
Steve Leighton and Pasul (Watertown, MA - ph: 617-926-3597) caught and released 15 bass up to 5 lbs during 1 day (Oct. 25, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Ron's Guide Service. Bass were caught off of the Harney Pond Canal cuts on Lake Okeechobee.
Richard Flack (Sykesville, MD - e-mail: Maddee3522@aol.com) caught and released 15 bass up to 7 lbs during a half day (Oct. 22, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Ron's Guide Service. Bass were caught off of the Harney Pond Canal cuts on Lake Okeechobee.
Tom Fernandez (Chicago, IL - ph: 815-654-0662) caught and released 8 bass up to 5 lbs during a half day (Oct. 21, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Ron's Guide Service. Bass were caught on the North Shore area of Lake Okeechobee.
Bruce and Molly McGirr (Lockport, NY - e-mail: mmcgirr@localnet.com) caught and released about 75 bass that included two 5 lb., two 5 1/2 lb., one 7 lb., one 8 1/2 lb. and one 8 3/4 lb'er during 5 days (Oct. 18 - 22, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Ron's Guide Service. Molly caught the 8 1/2 lb'er while bruce landed the 7 and 8 3/4 lb'er. Bass were caught in the Monkey Box, North Shore and Moonshine areas of Lake Okeechobee.
Bob Fuentes and 11 year old son Carlos (Sandy Hook, CT - e-mail: rfuentes@mindspring.com) caught and released only 10 bass up to 3 1/2 lbs. during 2 days (Oct. 14 - 16, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Ron's Guide Service. They had some good action on their first half day of wild shiner fishing. We wild shiner fished them straight through on their second day due to the wind and rain hurricane Irene was expected to produce later in the day. On their last morning the rain let up but not the wind which was really blowing and in turn ripping up the lake water. In sprite of the very slow fishing and poor weather conditions they told me that they had a good time. Bass were caught in secluded coves in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee.
Page Campbell (Luray, VA - e-mail: sarac@shentel.net) and Junior Roy (Stanley, VA) who are Virginia policemen caught 37 bass which included a 7 lb’er during 3 days (Oct. 12 - 14, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Captain Ron. Page caught the 7 lb’er. Most of the bass ran in the 3 - 4 lb range. All 37 bass were caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee. All the bass were live released.
Kevin Garvey (New York, NY - ph: 212-360-6955 - e-mail: KMGARV@aol.com) and Frank and Andrew Lepore caught 17 bass up to 7 lbs. during one day (Oct. 11, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Cap’n Ron. Kevin caught and released the 7 lb’er. He also had on two other big bass that somehow threw the hook. All bass which were released were taken using shiners in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee.
Jim Alford (Bowling Green, KY - did not get his phone number or e-mail address) caught 34 bass up to 4 lbs. during one day (Oct. 11, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Ron’s Guide Service. All bass which were released were caught in the Monkey Box and North Shore areas of Lake Okeechobee.
John and Liana Harress (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada - ph: 905-855-3646) caught 16 bass up to 4 lbs. during 2 half day sessions (Oct. 9 and 10, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Ron’s Guide Service. This nice catch of bass was caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee. All bass were live released.
Brad Estes (Habley, MA - e-mail: bestes@ix.netcom.com) caught 10 bass up to 5 lbs. during a day (Oct. 5, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Captain Ron. Bass were caught in the Monkey Box of Lake Okeechobee. All the bass were live released.
Bill and Patricia Molen (Bradenton, FL - e-mail: wmolen@aol.com) caught 25 bass up to 5 1/2 lbs. during 2 half day sessions (Oct. 2 and 3, 1999) of wild shiner fishing with Captain Ron. Bill caught the 5 1/2 lb’er. This catch of bass was caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee. All the bass were live released.
