REFERENCES FROM: Florida wild shiner bass fishing anglers John Widlak (Dalzell, SC - ph: 803-499-5744 - e-mail: jwidlak@earthlink.net) and Duane Spence (Camden, SC) caught and released 11 bass up to 7 lbs during 2 half days (February 18 & 19, 2001) of Florida wild shiner bass fishing with with Ron's Guide Service. Bass were caught in Harney Pond canal area of Lake Okeechobee.
Honeymoon couple Paul and Hollie Hendricks (York, SC - ph: 803-684-7018) caught 12 bass that included a 5 3/4 lb'er that Paul caught using shiners during the 2 half days (June 27 & 28, 1999) they fished with Captain Ron. All fish were which were released were caught in the Monkey Box area of Lake Okeechobee.
8 1/2 lb. Lake Okeechobee trophy bass.
Brett Willingham and dad (Fountain Inn, SC - ph: 864-862-2108) caught 21 bass which included a 6 3/4 and 8 1/2 lb'er using shiners during the 1 day (May 12, 1998) they fished with pro guide Captain Ron (Ron's Guide Service). All the bass were released.
6 lb. Okeechobee bass.Guide party Gator and wife Vickie Allen (N. Augusta, SC - home ph: 803-302-0217 - e-mail: Gallen1342@aol.com) caught and released 6 bass up to 6 lbs. during one day of fishing (Jan. 22, 1998). Vickie caught the 6 lb'er late in the evening session of fishing. We had poor fishing due to heavy winds which limited access to fishing areas. Had 2 big fish "blow ups" that we were unable to hook into.
Ken Parker (Johns Island, SC - ph: 803-745-0027) and Larry Brown (Summerville, SC - ph: 803-821-3381) caught and released about 20 bass up to 6 1/2 lbs. during one day of wild shiner fishing with Captain Ron.
Guided Keith Herring (Mullins, SC - home ph: 803-464-6743 - e-mail: mullins2@aol.com) and Tommy Boyette (Green Sea, SC - home ph: 803-392-3445) to 40 bass up to 4 ½ lbs. All bass which were released were caught using shiners. I fished Lake Okeechobee north shore area in the lily patches scattered throughout the area. Small bass as well as several big bass were blasting the shiner clear out of the water. These blowups which are quite common during this time of the year (spawning season) are an exciting sight to see. My party hung several big bass which threw the hook somehow... They had plenty of action but were unable to hook the fish. Most of the bass would just kill the shiner in the manner noted above. The best way I have found in the thirteen years I have guided on Okeechobee of hooking bass that hit this way is to set up on them as soon as they have the shiner.
